Logo proposed to Lehigh University’s Martindale Center

Martindale Center is a Lehigh University organization that sponsors selected students to study a country’s sustainable private enterprises and economic systems for a semester. The following semester, the students get the opportunity to travel to that country to learn more about the culture and economic systems in person.

As co-creative director for Lehigh University’s Fusion, in-house student-run design agency, I met directly with the client and conceived a look that complements the department’s vision and champions the students they represent.

The goal of the proposed icon is to symbolize Martindale Center’s world wide access. The color and the shape of the icon lend itself to a global perspective. Growth is depicted by the blue and green color and the “blossoming” of the icon.

The first step I took after meeting with the client was to sketch out ideas. I started by making a list of words that I associate with Martindale. Then, I began to sketch out rough icons based on feelings associated with my list of words.

The next step I took was to create icons in Illustrator. I’ve shown here a few of the icons I designed. Most of these icons draw inspiration from the M of Martindale, or the international connections that Martindale provides their students.

In this image, I show my final logo that the Fusion team presented to the clients, along with other student’s designs. While the Martindale team decided to use a a traditional serif font as their logo, one without an icon, I still l feel passionate about this icon and the process and steps I took to get to this final logo.
